Chapter Seven

Jace, grumbling under his breath, led the way into his brother’s office. He and Jarred never shared. As children, they hoarded their possessions. If one of them needed a uniform piece for the academy, they knew better than to ask the other. Those experiences were burned deep into him, and now using something of Jarred’s was as unnatural as the thought of coloring his hair purple. It was okay for Yune, but never for him.

When he turned, Yune flinched. Jace instantly felt like a monster hiding in a closet ready to attack. Instead of helping Yune feel comfortable by giving him gentle, coaxing words, Jace remained silent.

“I–I,” Yune stuttered but stopped and started to look all around the room, which proceeded to annoy Jace even more as the reasons for his anger crawled back into his thoughts. This room was filled with memories of Jarred. Memories that Yune shared with his brother.

“Talk to him,” Rory yelled from the other room. Yune tensed and turned. Rory gave them a thumbs-up, while Jarred nodded. Yune waved at them, ignoring Jace again.

Jace growled, walked past Yune, and closed the door. “We don’t want an audience.” The words were simple and said with a sternness he only used with warriors that did stupid things like daring to arrive late. As far as Jace was concerned, a late man was no warrior. During a battle, Jace couldn’t stop and ask the enemy to hold off because some of his soldiers were missing. Yune never arrived on time, but for some reason, it didn’t bother him as much. Yune was different. Special.

After the door hissed closed, Jace waited for Yune to start the conversation. If it wasn’t for his teeth biting into his lower lip, Jace might have thought Yune was a statue, stiff and unbending. No, it wasn’t just that. Jace frowned. The sparkle in Yune’s eyes that attracted him from planets away had faded. That prompted Jace to act.

“Do you want to talk? That’s why you called me in here.”

Yune pushed back his blond hair as his brow furrowed in thought. The worry was another thing that didn’t belong. Yune always radiated confidence. It surrounded him and drew others in. At Dragon’s Bar, Jace had almost killed a few of Yune’s admirers. They flew toward Yune, all of them willing and eager to fuck his mate. Yune wasn’t just attractive. He released a warmth that made all the other men look like dim stars, not burning suns like the small fireball standing in front of Jace.

Yune sighed and began to fidget.

This side of Yune left Jace smiling. Maybe Yune’s nervous behavior had nothing to do with him and more to do with being in Jarred’s office. Just the thought of his brother pinning Yune beneath him reminded Jace of his anger. He couldn’t let go.

“It was nice of Jarred to let us use his office,” Yune said with a sincerity that couldn’t be denied.

“Nice? That’s not a word I’d use to describe it.” There was nothing nice in anything Jarred did.
